Ancient methods. Ancient methods of treating diseases

Antipyretics for children are prescribed by a pediatrician. But there are emergency situations with fever when the child needs to be given medicine immediately. Then the parents take responsibility and use antipyretic drugs. What is allowed to be given to infants? How can you lower the temperature in older children? What medications are the safest?

The level of development of modern medicine is very high. We have at our disposal a huge selection of all kinds of drugs and medicines, unique diagnostic techniques, and high-tech equipment. However, medicine has achieved such development literally in the last half century. Even 60 years ago, the treatment methods used were highly controversial. Often, it was not the disease that killed the patient, but its treatment.

For example, one of the methods of curing stuttering was removing part of the tongue.

Doctors of the 18th and 19th centuries assumed that stuttering in patients was associated with problems in the vocal cords. To eliminate the defect, a hemiglossectomy procedure was recommended. In simple terms, removing a triangular-shaped part of the tongue. The doctors assured that this operation would improve the clarity of pronunciation. The procedure was incredibly dangerous and painful. There was no anesthesia and the patient risked dying from painful shock or blood loss. However, there was no reduction in stuttering at all.

A method of treating migraine is craniotomy.

According to historians, drilling a hole in the skull is one of the first surgical operation carried out by humans. During pagan times, people assumed that all diseases were caused by evil spirits. Having made a hole in the skull, the shamans expelled spirits from the patient’s body. Even in Neolithic times, migraines, epilepsy, and mental disorders were treated in this way. Modern neurosurgeons also perform craniotomy, but only to provide access to the brain for further manipulation.

Cough in children: prescribe syrup with heroin

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were no health institutions that were responsible for testing new drugs and granting approval for their use. So anyone could sell medical supplies, containing anything. One of the most shocking drugs of the time was children's cough syrup containing heroin. It was a product of Bayer, a company that made huge money selling aspirin and heroin as cough, cold and pain remedies. However, cases of addiction to cough syrup soon became known, both in children and adults. In the United States, heroin was banned from being prescribed in 1914, and a complete ban on it was imposed in 1924.

Treatment of all diseases: let us bleed

In ancient times, healers believed that blood and other body fluids must be in balance to maintain health. One of the favorite ways to achieve this balance was the procedure of bloodletting and it was prescribed for almost any reason until the end of the 18th century. And the first mentions of bloodletting date back to the 5th century BC. e. and found in the writings of Hippocrates, who advised bleeding the patient to “cleanse” the body.

He said that it works the same way as female menstruation - “everything unnecessary and bad comes out of a woman.” This means that other diseases can be treated in a similar way. Today, bloodletting is considered a pseudoscience and its ineffectiveness has long been proven.

In those days when doctors did not yet understand human anatomy and physiology, they acted as priests or healing magicians. Then people believed that the cause of illnesses was demons that settled in the body or the wrath of the gods sent from heaven. Well, the treatment was appropriate.

For example, in ancient Babylon The human skull was considered a proven remedy for teeth grinding at night. He had to be put in bed and sleep like that for a whole week. This is because teeth grinding is caused by the ghosts of dead relatives trying to make contact with the sleeping person. By the way, it was necessary not only to sleep next to the skull, but also to hug and kiss it in order to lift the curse.

Treatment of many diseases: we prescribe powder from mummies for oral administration

Doctors of the ancient and not-so-ancient past used cannibalism for treatment. The ancient Romans believed that gladiator's blood could heal seizures, and in the 17th century, King Charles of England drank the medicinal drink “Royal Drops,” made from crushed human skulls and alcohol and designed to restore health and vitality monarch.

In the 16th century, another strange medical fashion came to Europe: powder from Egyptian mummies began to be sold as medicine. However, few people knew that in fact these were not mummies, but recently killed slaves. A couple of centuries ago, people believed that mummies powder was an excellent hemostatic agent.

It sounds disgusting, but it's absolutely true: the ancient Romans rinsed their mouths with urine to keep their teeth shiny and white. And we are not talking about fresh urine, but about old, aged urine - it contains a lot of ammonia, which is a bleaching agent. Well, fresh urine was used as an antiseptic in the treatment of wounds, burns and scorpion stings.

Today everyone knows that cigarettes and other tobacco products are very harmful, but in the past people believed that inhaling vapors and smoke could clear the chest and cure coughs, asthma and other respiratory diseases. There were cigarettes “especially for asthmatics” and they were recommended by doctors. The first warning labels about the dangers of smoking appeared on cigarette packs in 1966 in the USA, and before that even children could buy and smoke cigarettes quite safely.

Today, women can decide for themselves whether they want to have a child or not. In this case, there are many different methods of contraception. They used to exist too, but they were very special. For example, in ancient Egypt, dried crocodile droppings were considered the most popular contraceptive. The medicine was very expensive and was considered an effective barrier method of contraception. In fact, it often led to infection.

Syphilis: prescribing a mercury-based medicine

If you accidentally swallow mercury today, call an ambulance immediately. And just 100 years ago, people ingested mercury of their own free will and as prescribed by a doctor. For some reason, mercury fascinated doctors for a long time and they considered it extremely healing. Mercury ointments and rubs, mercury-based creams for healing wounds and treating skin diseases, mercury as a remedy for syphilis and typhoid fever... When patients began treatment, they developed symptoms of mercury poisoning, but all these symptoms were usually attributed to the worsening of the disease.

Schizophrenia: we overdose with insulin and give electric shocks

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder. A schizophrenic has difficulty understanding what is real and what is not, and experiences auditory hallucinations, attacks of paranoia and fantastic delusions. Antipsychotic drugs that can help with this disorder only appeared in the 60s of the 20th century, and before that time there were various methods of “treatment” that today can only be called barbaric. One of these methods was insulin shock therapy.

It was first used in 1927 and was widely used until the 50s. The treatment consisted of regularly injecting the patient with large doses of insulin, which caused him to fall into a coma. While the patient was in a coma, he was subjected to electroshock therapy. Unhappy people.

Mental disorders: doing a lobotomy

A lobotomy is a procedure in which a doctor inserts a sharp instrument, similar to an ice pick, through the patient's eye socket and separates the frontal, parietal, temporal, or occipital lobe of the brain from other areas. This “operation” was very popular in the 40s and 50s of the 20th century and was used to treat the mentally ill. Most often, after a lobotomy, patients became obedient, lethargic, and turned into a “vegetable.”

Hemorrhoids: treated with a hot metal rod

Hemorrhoids are a painful disease that brings great discomfort, but today they can treat it, even in extremely advanced cases. In ancient times, a patient with this disease knew that the treatment he would face was more severe than the disease itself. They treated him by inserting anus patient with a thin hot metal rod. A real execution.

“Hysteria”: we prescribe long-term bed rest

In the 19th century, overly emancipated women who read too much and wanted to achieve the right to participate in elections were labeled “hysterics.” Psychiatric hospitals were overflowing with these unfortunate women who were being treated with "rest." The treatment consisted of prohibiting the woman from getting up for at least two months. She had to lie in bed in one position. It was forbidden to read, draw or talk. At the same time, they were fed for slaughter - since, according to doctors of that time, a well-fed woman has better mental health.

Diagnosis of a patient: taste his urine

Today's doctors have a variety of diagnostic tools at their disposal. And doctors of the past had to rely on their instincts, literally. They worked with what they could see, hear, feel, smell and, yes, taste. And doctors quickly realized that the diabetic patient's urine attracted ants and smelled something sweet. So they began to taste urine to see if a person was suffering from high level Sahara. The optimal diagnostic method.

Russian folk remedy for eczema and many other skin diseases
Take a dozen eggs, hard boil them, remove the yolks. Putting the yolk on a knitting needle or fork or placing it on a metal mesh, hold the candles over the fire. The heated yolk will produce drops of juice, which must be collected in a bowl. As soon as you notice that the drop on the yolk is increasing, you need to substitute the dishes. If it drips, heat the yolk again. It takes a lot of time to melt the right amount of “precious” ointment.
The number of eggs in the recipe - 12 - is taken arbitrarily. It is necessary to take into account which area of the skin is affected by eczema or other skin disease. Sometimes two eggs are enough, and other times a whole hundred or even more are required. This “oil” should be thickly lubricated with gauze or a cloth and applied to the affected area. Folk method for treating gangrene and abscesses
Do readers know that Russian doctors traditional medicine saved tens and tens of thousands of arms and legs, hundreds and hundreds of fingers from amputation due to gangrene?
Doctors for gangrene almost always resort to surgical methods treatment. Doctors of Russian folk medicine use the following remedy.
Take freshly baked black bread, preferably rye, and, after adding plenty of salt to it, chew it thoroughly. The sore spot is covered with a thick layer of chewed bread and bandaged. This remedy is true and unusually strong.
Several Russian doctors of official medicine tried... to improve this “wild” method of folk healers, adding to black bread and salt some of the apothecary wisdom, which, in their opinion, should have replaced chewing. All these attempts came to nothing. When chewed, bread and salt are mixed with saliva, and the latter apparently plays an important role in the treatment of gangrene and abscesses.
Although the described folk remedy is strong and reliable, in most cases you should consult a doctor, because gangrene is a very serious disease.
One lady developed a malignant abscess on her finger, which soon turned into gangrene. The finger began to turn black, and the doctor advised it to be amputated. The operation was scheduled for two days later. The unfortunate lady, with tears in her eyes, began calling everyone she knew. Luckily for her, one of them knew a folk remedy for gangrene, and the lady immediately began treatment. On the day of the operation, the doctor sterilized and boiled all surgical supplies. Having removed the bandage from the patient’s finger, the doctor was amazed at the wonderful metamorphosis: the patient’s finger was white instead of black. Declaring that the operation was completely unnecessary, the doctor became interested in the method of treatment. The lady willingly told him about the chewed black bread.

People have always been sick. Our ancestors had knowledge that was superior in certain aspects modern medicine or were on par with her. But some of the treatments were strange, to say the least.

1. Teeth were treated with a steaming mixture of goat fat

Already in ancient times, people learned to put dental fillings and make dentures. In Northern Italy, a group of archaeologists found a human tooth with cured caries during excavations. The age of the find is about 14 thousand years.

But some methods are confusing. For example, Avicenna advised treating caries by fumigating the patient with a smoking mixture of goat fat, henbane and onions. And Pliny the Elder believed that if you have a toothache, you need to catch a toad during the full moon, spit in its mouth and say “healing” words.

2. Gave birth while squatting or standing

It is curious that in ancient times, during childbirth, a woman did not take a horizontal position, as is customary today, but squatted or gave birth while standing.

In ancient India they knew how to turn a fetus if the child was in the wrong position, and in African tribes sometimes healers were able to perform a Caesarean section with primitive instruments.

In Egypt, an extract from mandrake fruit was prepared for this purpose. In India and China, incense, cannabis and aconite were used as anesthesia for surgery. It is unknown whether such analgesia was effective.

4. Chronic diseases were treated with exercise and holy water

During the time of Hippocrates (460–370 BC), epilepsy was believed to be caused by divine will. The ancient healer was convinced that this disease occurs due to wind, cold and sun. In the Middle Ages, it was believed that those suffering from this disease were possessed by demons, and the unfortunate were treated with prayers and holy water.

Doctors of Antiquity and the Middle Ages treated diabetes physical exercise And medicinal herbs, but it was ineffective, and the patients died.

They were documented in Antiquity skin diseases like psoriasis. But they were considered incurable. Therefore, in the Middle Ages, people suffering from this disease would hang a bell so that others would know that they were approaching.

5. Almost all diseases were treated with bloodletting

For many centuries, bloodletting was used to treat all diseases. This method of treatment was popular in India and Arab countries, and the first written mentions date back to Ancient Greece and Egypt.

It was believed that the blood contained a “harmful liquid” that needed to be released, then the person would be healed. In the Middle Ages, barbers practiced bloodletting. This method was popular until the 19th century. And one of the founders of the United States, George Washington, was treated for a sore throat with bloodletting, after which he died.

Unusual ancient treatment methods

Grafova S

Doctors are supposed to work under the motto "do no harm," but history shows that sometimes ancient physicians resorted to some downright stupid and heartbreaking methods to treat their patients. Here are some of them.

Bloodletting

For thousands of years, doctors were convinced that disease was simply the result of "bad blood" in the body. Bloodletting as a treatment probably dates back to the ancient Sumerians and Egyptians, but it was not a common practice until the development of classical medicine Greece and Rome.Influential physicians such as Hippocrates and Galen believed that the human body is filled with four basic substances or "juices" - yellow bile, black bile, mucus and blood, and these substances must be in balance to maintain good health. In view of this, patients with fever or other illness were often diagnosed with an excess of blood. To restore bodily harmony, the doctor simply cut a vein and drained some of the blood into a vessel. In some cases, leeches were used to suck out the “excess" blood.

Bloodletting as a treatment method was used even in the 19th century. Medieval doctors prescribed bloodletting to treat everything from sore throats to plague. and in some hairdressing salons, bloodletting was included in the list of services along with shaving and haircuts.

Craniotomy

Craniotomy is an old form of medical surgery and also one of the most gruesome. As far back as 7,000 years ago, drilling holes in the skull was used as a means of treating diseases. Researchers can only speculate about how and why this horrific form of brain surgery was first developed. A common theory states that this may have been some form of tribal ritual or even a method of liberation from evil spirits believed to be possessed by the sick and mentally ill. Some researchers claim that this was a common operation used to treat epilepsy, headaches, and stroke.

Treatment with mercury

Today, mercury is known to have toxic properties, but it was once widely used as a healing elixir in medicine. Even the ancient Persians and Greeks, and later Chinese alchemists, valued liquid mercury and red mercuric sulfide because of their supposed ability to increase vitality and increase life expectancy.

Some healers even promised their patients that by consuming food containing mercury, sulfur and arsenic, they would gain eternal life and the ability to walk on water. One of the most famous victims of this "diet" was the Chinese emperor Qin Shi Huang (258-246 BC), who, according to legend, died after taking a mercury pill that was supposed to make him immortal.

By the way, the first remedy for treating syphilis - mercury compounds and mercury ointments - was proposed by the famous Paracelsus. Mercury ointment was then rubbed into the legs. Mercury preparations have been used for 450 years. In the USSR, until 1963, drugs of this group were included in clinical guidelines in the treatment of syphilis. However, such treatment was not effective enough and was very toxic for the patient, leading to a high risk of developing serious complications.

Medicines from animals

The ancient Egyptians used medicines made from dead mice, mouse tails, body parts and excrement of worms, pigs, goats, etc. Thus, one of the means used to treat childhood illnesses in Ancient Egypt (according to the Smith papyrus) was a mouse, which the child had to swallow whole. It is unknown how effective this remedy was, but there is still hope that modern doctors will not adopt this technique.

Medicine from mummies.

Do you suffer from constant headaches, muscle cramps or stomach ulcers? Once upon a time, your local doctor might have prescribed you an elixir containing human flesh, blood and bones. This practice has been common for hundreds of years.

And in the Middle Ages, Arab and Jewish traders extracted ancient mummies from Egyptian tombs, ground them into powder and sold them as medicine. This medicine could be found in almost every pharmacy in Europe until the modern era. It was believed that the medicine from the mummy was good for treating bruises and wounds.

Due to the shortage of real mummies, pharmacists often cheated, using fakes from the corpses of beggars, victims of epidemics and stillborn children.

In the 16th century, French writer and philosopher Michel Montaigne branded the practice as a form of cannibalism.

Living womb

Ancient Greek doctors believed that a woman's uterus was a separate creature with a mind of its own. According to the works of Plato and Hippocrates, if a woman is celibate for a long time, then the uterus, eager to give birth to children, leaves its place and moves freely throughout the body, causing the woman some kind of suffering. Here, for example: (Works of Hippocrates VOLUME 3. About women's diseases, translation from Greek: prof. V. I. Rudnev)

“When the uterus is located at the lower back or in the side, when breathing is increased and there is suffocation, then the woman often becomes a victim of asthma...”

“If the uterus is fixed near the liver, the woman immediately loses her voice, her teeth clench, her color turns bluish. She suddenly experiences these symptoms in full health...”

“If the uterus, fixed at the heart, causes suffocation and if the air going upward is forcibly attracted, then the woman experiences melancholy and vomiting, dizziness; sometimes also winds, whirling, go down and out, or even foamy vomiting occurs - and after this "For a while, the woman feels better. If the uterus does not separate from the heart, you need to crush leek and poppy seeds, moisten them with one kiat of water and give them to drink."

This curious error survived in some form through the times of the Romans and Byzantines. It was only much later that doctors learned that the uterus was held in place by ligaments.

To prevent the uterus from wandering around the body, ancient women were advised to get married as early as possible and give birth to as many children as possible. And for the womb, which had already vacated after the birth of the child, doctors prescribed medicinal baths, infusions and massages to try to force the uterus to return to its place. They recommended that women “smoke” the uterus with sulfur and resin and rub odorous lotions between their thighs - believing that the uterus would run away from unpleasant odors and will return to its rightful place.
