Alcohol stimulates the production of GGTP. This is in addition to the direct toxic effect. In people who drink a lot and often, the degree of increase in this indicator clearly depends on the amount of ethyl alcohol consumed. This test can be successfully used to identify alcoholism, as well as to monitor treatment. When you give up alcoholic beverages for 10 days, the activity of gamma-GT in the blood decreases by 50%.

Effect of drugs

Many drugs that have a gapatotoxic effect increase the formation of the enzyme. These include:

  • hormonal agents - estrogens, androgens, anabolic steroids, corticosteroids;
  • neuroleptics – aminazine, haloperidol;
  • barbiturates – phenobarbital;

  • antifungal agents - amphotericin, griseofulvin, ketoconazole, fluconazole;
  • anesthetics - ethers, halothane, chloroform;

This is not a complete list. Induction of liver enzymes is often combined with direct toxic effects and cholestasis.
